Literature Review Topic: Studying with classical music will increase concentration ability, allowing for quicker problem solving. Name of article: â€Å"Does music help you study?† Author: Sheela Doraiswamy Website: â€Å"Mind the science gap† Date published: October 8 2012 1:Different background noise/music was used to test students recalling abilities. The test was carried out in a quiet room with first, no sound then a steady state speech (in this case three was repeated), changing state speech (numbers from 1-9 were repeated in a random order), then liked and disliked music. The study showed no significant difference between changing state speech, or liked (pop) and disliked (metal) music. All three were equally distracting. Steady state speech produced higher results because it is easier for the brain to tune out repetitive noises. Value: This study successfully shows that certain noises/music can be more distracting than others. The author refers to studies conducted by universities and uses information from professionals. Limitations: Even though classical music was not played during this study, it shows how other music can be a distraction to concentration. This study uses a variety of noises/music and can therefore not be considered biased. It is a reliable source because it was carried out at the University Of Wales in a controlled environment.
